Hanzo Gaiden is best described as Akira Kurosawa samurai films (Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Throne of Blood) meets Mouse Guard, with supernatural elements similar to Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke. The story takes place in the woodland forest land of Covertree. Long after the days of giants (humans), chipmunks have risen to dominance among the forest animals by excelling in warfare. They rule over the land in a culture centered around feudal Japan.

The story arc will center around a cunning chipmunk shinobi (a freelance ninja) named Hanzo. Hanzo ventures around the great land of Covertree, finding work and completing dangerous missions he is given by samurai clans or peasant clients. As he embarks on his journey through the series, he encounters many obstacles in war torn Covertree at the hands of the presumed to be dead General Goro.
